How to Find Your Windows Installation ID
If you're completing an alternative Windows activation process, you may be asked for an Installation ID.
The Installation ID is commonly abbreviated as:
IID
It consists of numerical groups generated during the activation process.
Is the Installation ID My Product Key?
No.
These are completely different.
A Microsoft product key generally follows a format such as:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
The Installation ID consists of numerical groups generated by the activation interface.
Finding Activation Settings in Windows 11
Open:
Start → Settings → System → Activation
Review the available activation options.
Depending on your Windows build and activation situation, Microsoft may provide an automated or offline activation workflow.
Finding Activation Settings in Windows 10
Navigate to:
Settings → Update & Security → Activation
If an alternative activation option is available, follow the displayed instructions.
Using SLUI
Older Windows tutorials often recommend opening Run using:
Windows + R
and entering:
slui 4
This command has historically opened the phone activation interface on supported Windows versions.
However, Microsoft has changed parts of the Windows activation experience, so it may not behave identically on every modern Windows build.
What Should I Do With My Installation ID?
Follow the supported Microsoft activation process for your version of Windows.
When an IID/CID workflow is available, your Installation ID is processed as part of the activation request.
A successful request can provide a Confirmation ID.
Copy Your IID Carefully
Make sure:
- Every group is included.
- Every digit is correct.
- The groups remain in the correct order.
- You're using the current Installation ID.
If Windows generates a new Installation ID, don't assume information from a previous request will remain applicable.
Keep Your Activation Information Private
Never publish:
- Product keys
- Sensitive activation information
- Account credentials
If you need assistance with a Webdigikey order, provide your order information privately through the appropriate support channel.
