What Is a Confirmation ID?

A Confirmation ID, commonly abbreviated as CID, is used during certain Microsoft offline activation processes.

It should not be confused with your product key or Installation ID.

Understanding Product Key, IID and CID

Here's the easiest way to understand the relationship:

Product Key

Installation ID (IID)

↓

Activation Request

↓

Confirmation ID (CID)

Activation Completed

Each item has a different purpose.

What Is the Product Key?

The product key is associated with the Microsoft software license.

It commonly appears in a format similar to:

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

What Is the Installation ID?

The Installation ID is generated during an eligible activation process.

It represents information associated with the activation request for that installation.

What Is the Confirmation ID?

The Confirmation ID is the response used to complete the applicable offline activation process.

It generally contains multiple numerical groups.

These groups must be entered correctly into the corresponding activation fields.

Why Doesn't My Confirmation ID Work?

Possible causes include:

  • Incorrect Installation ID
  • Incorrect Confirmation ID
  • Wrong Microsoft product edition
  • A new Installation ID was generated
  • The activation request is no longer applicable
  • The product key isn't suitable for that installation

Don't repeatedly enter random numbers. Verify the activation information first.

Can I Use the Same CID on Another Computer?

You should not assume a Confirmation ID generated for one activation request can be used for another computer or installation.

Activation eligibility depends on the software, license, device and applicable Microsoft licensing conditions.

Is a CID the Same as a Product Key?

No.

A product key and CID serve completely different purposes.

The product key is used to identify/activate the licensed product.

The CID is part of an eligible offline activation workflow.

Conclusion

Remember:

Key = Software license/activation key

IID = Installation request information

CID = Confirmation information

Keeping these concepts separate makes Microsoft activation significantly easier to understand.
