Windows Installation ID and Confirmation ID Explained
If Windows cannot complete normal online activation, an alternative activation process may be available.
Two terms you may encounter are:
Installation ID (IID)
and
Confirmation ID (CID)
Although they sound similar, they serve different purposes.
What Is an Installation ID?
An Installation ID is generated by Windows during certain activation processes.
It represents information associated with the current activation request.
It is not your Windows product key.
What Is a Confirmation ID?
A Confirmation ID is the information returned as part of a successful eligible offline activation process.
The general workflow is:
Windows Product Key

Installation ID

How to Access Windows Activation
On Windows 11, start with:
Settings → System → Activation
On Windows 10:
Settings → Update & Security → Activation
The exact options available depend on your Windows build and activation status.
What About "Activate by Phone"?
Older Windows activation guides frequently refer to an Activate by Phone option.
You may still encounter this terminology, but Microsoft's activation interfaces have changed over time.
Current Windows offline activation can direct customers toward Microsoft's Product Activation Portal.
For this reason, don't rely exclusively on old tutorials or old Microsoft phone numbers.
What About SLUI 4?
You may also encounter tutorials recommending:
Windows + R
followed by:
slui 4
This has historically been used to access the Windows phone activation interface.
However, behavior can vary depending on the Windows version and build.
If the expected activation interface doesn't appear, use the current Windows Activation settings and Microsoft's current activation instructions.
Important Activation Tips
Before beginning:
- Install the correct Windows edition.
- Enter the correct product key.
- Check your internet connection if using online activation.
- Copy the complete IID accurately.
- Never publish your product key online.
- Follow Microsoft's current activation instructions.
Final Thoughts
Remember this simple distinction:
IID = Installation ID generated for the activation request
CID = Confirmation ID used to complete an eligible activation request
Understanding these terms makes troubleshooting Windows activation much easier.
